I took this novel to the beach and was royally entertained for hours. Even though Naked and Hungry is touted as a Southern novel, I could see the plot unfolding in just about any small town across America. I especially enjoyed Earl's "wandering" wife's attempts to seduce the protagonist, and his humorous methods of escaping her clutches.I also loved the scene in which HT first meets his love interest. He answers the door to his one room cabin with a swimming cap on his head; he had to sleep in it to keep the flea medication in his hair, fleas he caught from his dog Shorty who eventually upgrades to a new home with a swimming pool. So much for faithful!
If you like Richard Russo or James Wilcox, you'll enjoy this first book by southern author, Ashley Memory. Looking forward to Born Again, Dead Again, Memory's next book.

Ashley Memory quickly gets the action going in Naked and Hungry, when one evening someone takes a few pot shots at HT McMullen and his dog Shorty as they sit on his cabin's front porch. Along the way, we meet a fascinating assortment of quirky characters and experience a plot that spins out one hilarious scene after another. My favorite is HT's attendance at his own funeral, straight out of Tom Sawyer but with its own twist.
Eventually, HT solves the mystery of the shooting as well as the reason why purple fish keep turning up in a nearby pond. We also see that a good hearted person can still triumph in this world. It's a terrific read and one that ended too quickly for me.
H.T. McMullen is anything but a stereotypical Southern gentleman or a typical small town redneck. He's a good guy who gets caught up in the wrong places trying to do the right things. He's also an ordinary man looking for an ordinary life. But, there's nothing ordinary to this tale. Naked and Hungry will keep you amused and laughing out loud for years to come.
I absolutely loved Naked and Hungry. From the moment that I read the first page, I was hooked. It was a fast read (I am a very slow reader, but I just couldn't put it down).
H.T. was sitting on his front porch with his dog Shorty, and was aware that they had both been shot. He certainly did not know what was going on, so what did he do, he found his toolbox and got his gas-powered King Ram T-200 nail gun! Don't you just love it? Any self respecting `good `ol boy' in North Carolina would have had a hunting rifle, but H.T. grabbed a `nail gun'.
I loved that it had a bit of a love story. He met Jessica Beane who worked for the Grassroots Environmental Coalition. Jessica tracked down H.T. through an email that he sent about purple fish that he found in a pond that was near to where H.T. lived.
Then everything gets really complicated! So much for the relaxed, private live that H.T. thought that he had.
At one time H.T. was arrested and put in jail. He was advised by sheriff Wayne that he had one phone call. Did he call his lawyer, girlfriend, mother or a friend? No, he called the Winnabow County Library to see if the book that he had on reserve, My Comanche Moon, had come in yet. Since I am a book lover, I totally understand why he made that phone call.
I loved the characters in the book, but my favorite was H.T.'s mother Myrtle. She always had Bermadean with her, which was a goat that always wore cute little outfits.
I could go on and on about the story, but this is a book that you need to read yourself. You will find yourself smiling, laughing out loud, and just enjoying the people, place, and plot of Naked and Hungry. This is absolutely the most fun book that I have read.
Good news everyone, I have it on good authority that there will be another book that features good `ol H.T. I will save a special place on my book shelf for Ashley Memory books.

Good read. Sometimes the author tried too hard to be funny but mostly succeeded. I think the goat was a bit much.
Naked and Hungry is full of fun new characters in an absorbing mystery. From the double-dealing executive to the spoiled pet goat, no one is exempt from the nefarious plot unleashed in a small, backwoods town.
This is a very entertaining book. It reminds me of something that Elmore Leonard would write. The characters are eccentric but very believable. It's an entertaining read featuring small town USA versus greed and power with a timely environmental backdrop. Ashley Memory does a very nice job. I can't wait to read her next offering.
